carrick bend (plural carrick bends)

  1. (nautical) A strong bend knot commonly used to join two lines, ropes, and hawsers when required. A reliable safe knot if tied correctly, but unsafe if tied incorrectly, which is easily done. It is a basic knot which forms part of many other knots, hitches, bends, etc.
