gonić
Polish edit
Etymology edit
Inherited from Proto-Slavic *gonìti,[1] from Proto-Balto-Slavic *gánīˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰon-éye-ti, from *gʷʰen- (“to slay, strike”),[1] whence English fend; defend; offend. Cognate with Lithuanian ganýti (“to graze”),[1][2] Ancient Greek θείνω (theínō, “to slay”)[1][3] and Sanskrit हन्ति (hanti, “to slay”).[1][3]
