From Middle English houndestonge, from Old English hundes tunge (“hound's tongue (cynoglossum officinale)”, literally “hound's tongue”). Compare Dutch hondstong (“hound's tongue”), German Hundszunge (“plant of the genus Cynoglossum”, literally “hound's tongue”).
