Earlier spelling was inhiminen, compare inhimillinen. Possibly ihme plus -inen.

Unknown origin, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *ǵnh₁- "kin", (see laryngeal theory). Cognate to Estonian inimene and Karelian ihmini, old Finnish inehmo.
