From Proto-Finnic *kiro, from the same origin as Proto-Finnic *kirot'ak (whence kirota).

- kiro is much less frequently used than kirous, the commonly used noun for "a curse". kiro usually appears in the plural and with another noun in the genitive:
- noidan kirot ― curses of a witch; the state of being cursed by a witch
- viinan kirot ― the evil influence of alcohol
