From Old Irish laigid, from Proto-Celtic *legeti, from Proto-Indo-European *legʰ-. Cognate with Gothic 𐌻𐌹𐌲𐌰𐌽 (ligan) and Old Church Slavonic лещи (lešti). Compare Scottish Gaelic laigh and Irish luigh.
