Alteration, probably under influence of Gaulish ordiga (toe(?)) (cf. Old Irish orddu lamae (thumb)), of arteil, from Old French arteilh, from Latin articulus. Compare Occitan artelh and Spanish artejo. Doublet of article, a learned loan.
