Etymology edit
From Proto-Finnic *piimä (“milk”) (cognate with Estonian piim (“milk”), Votic piime (“milk”)), from Proto-Finno-Ugric *pejmä, a loanword from Late Proto-Indo-European *péyh₂-men- (specifically Pre-Proto-Indo-Iranian), reflected as Proto-Indo-Iranian *páyHmā (“milk”),[1] from Proto-Indo-European *peyh₂- (“to swell (with milk)”).
Pronunciation edit
Noun edit
piimä
- cultured milk, fermented milk, soured milk, buttermilk (fermented dairy product produced from cow's milk, with a characteristically sour taste)
- (dialectal, obsolete, Western Finnish) milk
- Synonym: maito
Usage notes edit
Without any qualifiers, piimä tends to refer to a cultured milk product that is only somewhat thicker than milk and still easily pourable, similar to buttermilk.
