Etymology edit
Coined by French naturalist, zoologist and paleontologist Georges Cuvier in 1809 in the misspelt form petro-dactyle from the Ancient Greek πτερόν (pterón, “wing”) + δάκτυλος (dáktulos, “finger”). Also ptéro- + -dactyle.
