Borrowed from New Latin pterygoīdēs, from Ancient Greek πτερῠγοειδής (pterugoeidḗs, “like a wing”), from πτέρῠξ (ptérux, “a wing”) + -ο- (-o-) + -ειδής (-eidḗs, “-like, -oid”).
