Inherited from Old French sojorner by vowel dissimilation (first ‘o’ → ‘é’), inherited from Vulgar Latin *subdiurnāre, from Latin sub- (under, a little over) + Late Latin diurnus (lasting for a day). Cognate to English sojourn.
