Sino-Vietnamese word from 所長, composed of 所 (“that which is”) and 長 (“long”), from Chinese 所長/所长. Compare Mandarin 所長/所长 (suǒcháng, sở trường, “forte”) and Japanese 長所 (chōsho, trường sở, “strong point”). Doublet of sở trưởng.
