Etymology edit

From Old Norse stauta, steyta, from Proto-Germanic *stautōną, *stautijaną, cognate with Norwegian Nynorsk støyte, Swedish stöta, German stoßen, and Dutch stoten. The verb is related to the noun *stautiz (Danish stød).
