From torrente, from Latin torrentem, present active participle of torreō (to scorch, burn, parch), from Proto-Italic *torzeō, causative of the Proto-Indo-European root *ters- (dry). By surface analysis, torrent(e) (torrent”, “stream) +‎ -izio (derivational suffix).
