From Proto-Finnic *touko, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *towke (“spring”). Cognate with Estonian tõug, Erzya тундо (tundo, “spring”), Northern Mansi тӯя (tūâ, “spring”), Hungarian tavasz (“spring”).
