Borrowed from German Witterung, from wittern, from Middle High German weter (weather). By surface analysis, vittra +‎ -ing. Doublet of väder.

Usage notes edit

Most commonly as "få (upp) vittring på" (to pick up the scent of, optionally with "upp" with no difference in meaning) and "ha vittring på" (to have picked up the scent of) in (sense 1).
