Inherited from Middle French escot, from Old French escot, escoz (payment), from Old Frankish *skot (tax, literally that which is thrown in), from Proto-Germanic *skutą (that which is thrown, shot, projectile, bullet, missile). Cognate with Old High German scoz (bullet, missile, projectile, javelin, shot), Old English scot, sceot (shot, lot, payment). More at scot.
