Derived from ħaġra (“stone”), perhaps after Italian lapidare. Formal inheritance from Arabic حَجَّرَ (ḥajjara) is possible, but this verb means “petrify” or “face with stones”. The word for “to stone” is رَجَمَ (rajama).
