From Proto-Semitic *šalaḥpaw/y-, *šalapḥaw/y- (turtle). Cognate with Arabic سُلَحْفَاة (sulaḥfāh) and Biblical Hebrew שַׁלְחוּפָה (šalḥup̄ɔ).
