editSmoczynski marks the word's origin as unknown.[1] Note, however, a strong phonetic and semantic resemblance to Proto-Indo-European *ḱey(h₂)- (“to start to move”), in which case compare Latin cieō (“to set in motion, invoke”) and Ancient Greek κῑνέω (kīnéō, “to set in motion”) (whence Russian кино́ (kinó, “movie, kino”)).
