editFrom Proto-Indo-European *ǵeyH-dʰ-, from *ǵeyH- (“to break open, germinate”); cognate with Proto-Germanic *kīnaną (“to split open, sprout”). See also žíedėti (“to become hard and moldy”), žíedas (“blossom, ring”).[1]
