From Hellenistic Koine Greek Ἰόνιον πέλαγος (Iónion pélagos), from Ancient Greek Ἰόνιος θάλασσα f (Iónios thálassa) or Ἰόνιος πόντος m (Iónios póntos) or just Ἰόνιον (Iónion) . From Ἰόνιος (Iónios, “Ionian”), traditionally related to Ἰώ (Iṓ, “Io, daughter of Inachus”) who swam through it, of unknown etymon and πέλαγος (pélagos).[1]
