Etymology

Learned borrowing from Katharevousa ἀγυιά (aguiá) from Ancient Greek ἀγυιᾱ́ (aguiā́), less common variant of ἄγυια (águia). Loaned in the 19th century to substitute the Demotic σοκάκι (sokáki) which was a Turkish loanword.
