From Proto-Hellenic *gʷápťō, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷh₂bʰ-yé-ti, from *gʷeh₂bʰ- (to dive, dive in). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *kwēbijaną, Avestan 𐬘𐬀𐬟𐬭𐬀 (jafra), Persian ژرف (žarf), Lurish گںهںر (gəhər, a lake), and Sanskrit गभीर (gabhīra), whence Hindi गहरा (gahrā).
