Ancient Greek

Etymology

edit

Unknown. Although it is commonly assumed that it was influenced by κάμπτω (kámptō, to bend, curve), this verb does not have the κ-, nor can the -ν- have been taken from there. An Indo-European etymology seems excluded, because γναμπ- cannot have an Indo-European preform. Even though an alternation γν/κ is not typical for Pre-Greek either, Beekes does not reject this hypothesis.
