δημοσκόπηση
Greek
editEtymology
editFrom δημο- (dimo-, “demo-”) + -σκόπηση (-skópisi, “-scopy”)[1] or a learned borrowing from German Demoskopie.[2] See δήμος m (dímos, “municipality, community”) & σκοπός m (skopós, “goal”). A word creation with Greek combining forms to replace the loanword γκάλοπ n (gkálop, “Gallup poll”).[3]
The initial sense of the synonym σφυγμομέτρηση f (sfygmométrisi) -attested since 1891-[4] was "measuring pulsation".[5]
