From German Zirkon (zircon mineral) via French zircon, formed in the 1780s from Arabic زَرْقُون (zarqūn, zircon, minium), from Middle Persian 𐭦𐭫𐭢𐭥𐭭 (zlgʿn /⁠zargōn⁠/), from Classical Persian زرگون (zargōn)/Middle Persian 𐭦𐭫𐭢𐭥𐭭 (zlgʿn /⁠zargōn⁠/, red lead), from Proto-Iranian *jr̥Hanyam (gold). Doublet of ζιργκόν (zirgkón).
