Etymology

Ultimately may be from Proto-Indo-European *ḱerh₃- (to feed, nourish, grow) (whose relation to *ḱer- (to grow), whence Latin creō (to procreate), is unclear) + -νῡμι (-nūmi). Cognate with Lithuanian šérti (to feed), Proto-Slavic *kъrmъ (fodder), and Armenian սեր (ser, origin; offspring; gender).[1][2]
