Ultimately may be from Proto-Indo-European *ḱerh₃- (to feed, nourish, grow). Cognate with Lithuanian šérti (to feed), Proto-Slavic *kъrmъ (fodder), and Armenian սեր (ser, origin; offspring; gender).[1][2]
