Etymology

edit

From an unattested earlier *κουρόγιδο (*kourógido), itself from κουρεύω (kourévo, cut hair) +‎ γίδι (gídi, young goat), probably in reference to Byzantine soldiers who were shaved with a goat's shears.

An alternative theory takes *κουρόγιδο (*kourógido) as a borrowing from Latin corrideo (to laugh together or aloud).
