From Byzantine Greek νερόν (nerón), from Ancient Greek νηρός (nērós, “wet, damp”), from νεαρός (nearós, “young, fresh”), from the term νεαρὸν ὕδωρ (nearòn húdōr, “fresh water”). Cognate with Greek νερό (neró) and Italiot Greek nerò.
