From Ancient Greek *ψυάριον (*psuárion) or *ψοιάριον (*psoiárion), diminutive of ψόᾱ (psóā), ψύᾱ f (psúā, muscle of the loins) + νεφρ(ός) (nefr(ós), kidney) +‎ (-i).[1] Unrelated to ψάρι n (psári, fish).
