From Old East Slavic Вѧчесла́въ (Vęčeslávŭ), from Proto-Slavic *Vęťeslàvъ, from *vęťьjь (greater, more) +‎ *slàva (glory, fame).

Cognate with Belarusian Вячасла́ў (Vjačasláŭ), Russian Вячесла́в (Vjačesláv), Old Novgorodian Вѧцьсла́ве (Vęćĭsláve), English Wenceslaus.
