Russian edit

Etymology edit

From Потёмка (Potjómka, a nickname), from потёмки (potjómki, darkness), from по- (po-, a comparative or delimitative prefix) + тёмный (tjómnyj, dark), from Proto-Slavic *tьmьnъ, + -ка (-ka, diminutive suffix) + -ин (-in, possessive suffix). This surname came from the nicknames Потёма (Potjóma)/Потёмка (Potjómka) that were given to a child born at twilight or at night. They may also mean "a secretive man".
