Probably from Proto-Slavic *badli, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂-dʰl-.[1] Possibly, however, formed in Old Church Slavonic or inherited from a form such as Proto-Slavic *bali, cf. the form bali[2] for expected *badli in the Freising Manuscripts.
