editFrom ба́ня (bánja) + -я́к (-ják), from Old East Slavic банꙗ (banja, “bathing place”) from Proto-Slavic *baňa, from Vulgar Latin *bānea, from Latin balineum, from Ancient Greek βαλανεῖον (balaneîon, “bath, bathhouse”).
