From Classical Mongolian ᠪᠡᠶ᠎ᠡ (bey-e), from Middle Mongol [Term?], from Proto-Mongolic *beje. Cognate with Mongolian бие (bije), Kalmyk бий (biy), etc. Compare also Yakut бэйэ (beye, body; self), Manchu ᠪᡝᠶᡝ (beye, body), Evenki бэе (bəje, body; person), etc.
