Cognate with Serbo-Croatian varati (to betray), Lithuanian var̃das (name), Latvian vārds (name; word), Latin verbum (word), English word, Ancient Greek εἴρω (eírō, to speak), ῥήτωρ (rhḗtōr, orator) (compare English rhetoric, borrowed from Greek), Hittite [script needed] (weriya-, to call, to name), Sanskrit व्रत (vratá, pledge, vow).
