Etymology

From the відку́пл- stem of відкупи́ти (vidkupýty) +‎ -ення (-ennja). A calque of Koine Greek ἀπολύτρωσις (apolútrōsis, deliverance, ransoming, redemption), the corresponding term in the Pauline epistles. Compare Polish odkupienie, Russian искупле́ние (iskuplénije).
