A bridge over Ider river, Jargalant sum

Etymology

edit
  1. Commonly treated as a form of хөөрөг (xöörög) and ᠬᠥᠭᠡᠷᠭᠡ (kögerge) from Proto-Mongolic *köxerge, compare Buryat хүүргэ (xüürge).
  2. Maybe from Proto-Turkic *köprüg, compare Turkish köprü.
  3. However initial voicing, үү instead of өө and missing -ge are all irregular and indicate perhaps a different origin.
  4. Further compare Daur xuurugw.
