From Ukrainian дба́ти (dbáty) and/or Belarusian дбаць (dbacʹ), from Old Ruthenian дба́ти (dbáti), possibly from Old Polish dbać, from Proto-Slavic *dъbati. Cognate with Polish dbać, Czech dbát.
