Etymology

edit

Ultimately from Latin democratia and Ancient Greek δημοκρατία (dēmokratía). First attested in 1704 as димократия, mimicking the Greek pronunciation.

The current form "демократия" most likely stems from German Demokratie. Had it been borrowed from French or Polish, it would have yielded "демокрация".
