Perhaps borrowed from a pseudo-Latin construction Latin *expōnātus ((something) exhibited, displayed), from expōnō (the correct past passive participle is expositus). Compare Russian экспона́т (eksponát), Belarusian экспана́т (ekspanát), Polish eksponat.
