  1. (usually Central Asia, Ottoman Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan or North Caucasus) (historical) zindan (an improvised cell consisting of a hole in the ground covered with a metal grille)
  2. (Chechnya, Ukraine) any improvised earth prison during the two Chechen wars, and during the Russo-Ukrainian War in the territories occupied by Russia.
