Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (üžik, syllable; letter), Karakhanid [script needed] (üžük, syllable), Tatar иҗек (icek, syllable), Tuvan үжүк (üjük, letter; alphabet).

Akhmetyanov suggests derivation from Middle Chinese (ji, letter, symbol, character).
