From Siberian Tatar ҡалыҡ (qalïq) and Kazakh халық (xalyq). Or from Classical Persian خَلْق (xalq), from Arabic خَلْق (ḵalq, creation; creatures; people). Compare also Shor қалық (qalïq, people) and Khakas халых (xalıx, people).
