From Proto-Mordvinic *kərga. Likely borrowed from Proto-Indo-European *gʷerh₃- (“to swallow, devour”). The connection with Finnish kurkku and Estonian kurk is considered doubtful.
Cognate with Moksha кърга (kərga).
