Erzya

edit

Etymology

edit

From Proto-Mordvinic *kərga, whence also Moksha крга (krga). Likely borrowed from Proto-Slavic *kъrkъ (neck) or a descendant of Proto-Indo-European *gʷerh₃- (to swallow, devour). A direct connection to Proto-Finnic *kurkku has also been proposed, but considered doubtful.
