From Proto-Mordvinic *kopəŕə (*kopə +‎ *-ŕə), possibly from the same onomatopoeic root as Udmurt купырмыны (kupyrmyny, to hunch over), Komi-Permyak копрасьны (kopraśny, to stoop, to bend down).
