Presumably borrowed from Lithuanian *kaušinas, derived from Lithuanian káušas (ladle, dipper, big spoon), itself derived from Lithuanian káuti (hew, chop out), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *káuˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *kowh₂-, from the root *kewh₂-.

Attested since 17th century.
