editBorrowed from Turkic language, probably from Crimean Tatar meydan or Ottoman Turkish میدان (meydan), further borrowed from Persian میدان (meydân), borrowed from Arabic مَيْدَان (maydān), borrowed from Old Persian *madyānaʰ, from Proto-Iranian *madyānah, from *mádyah, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mádʰyas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mádʰyas, from Proto-Indo-European *médʰyos. Doublet of межа́ (mežá). Cognate with Russian майда́н (majdán) (from Middle Russian маида́нъ (maidán)). First attested in the early 1600s.
