Inherited from Proto-Mongolic *nokaï, probably related to Xianbei 若干 (*ñaqañ) with further Para-Mongolic cognates.

Compare Kalmyk ноха (noxa), Dongxiang nogvei, Daur nogw, Para-Mongolic Khitan 𘰕𘯛 (*ń qo), 捏褐 (niehe), Tungusic Evenki некэ̄ (ņekə̄, sable), Jurchen nieha (puppy, small dog), Manchu ᠨᡳᠣᡥᡝ (niohe, wolf) and maybe Korean 너구리 (neoguri, raccoon dog).
